'Well's 8+

I have been watching Motherwell for over 45 years and the 8-1 win over Flamurtari in the 2nd Round of the Europa League was only the second time in my lifetime that we have scored eight or more in a game. Some said after the game that it was down to the opposition being so poor on the night that we scored eight but maybe history shows how big a feat this actually was.

We had only scored 8 in a game nine times before that game, and this was only bettered by scoring 9 on four occasions and our record of haul of 12 tops the lot.

In those fourteen games there are a couple of notable games, including Celtic's record defeat of 8-0 back in the 1930s. The full list reads;

Motherwell 8 Glasgow Thistle 1 24th March 1894 - Division 2

Galloway (4), Watson (2), Lambie, Ostler

Motherwell 8 Dumbarton 2 20th Nov 1920 - Division 1

Lennie (2), Robertson (4), Ferguson, Robertson

Motherwell 8 Third Lanark 0 21st March 1925 - Division 1

Ferguson (2), Stevenson (2), McGrath (2), Tennant, Ferrier

Motherwell 8 Kilmarnock 3 8th March 1933 - - Scottish Cup

McFadyen (4), Murdoch (2), Ellis, OG

Motherwell 8 Celtic 0 30th April 1937 - Division 1

Stewart (6), Ogilvie, Stevenson

Motherwell were looking to finish fourth of the table behind Champions Celtic when they took them on in the last game of the season. Motherwell played at the top of their game on the day and posted a record defeat on Celtic as they put eight past the Champions.

Celtic did suffer a couple of injuries with Keeper Kennaway playing through an injury and Morrison having to leave the field, although Well were four up by the time he departed. Goals from Ogilvie, Stevenson, and two from Stewart had Well four up at the break. With Celtic shorthanded after the break Stewart added four to his own personal tally to take his haul to six and his side's total to eight.

Motherwell 8 Queen of the South 5 13th August 1938 - Division 1

Bremner (3), Stewart (2), McCulloch, Telfer, Ogilvie

Huntly 1 Motherwell 8 21st January 1939 - Scottish Cup

Motherwell 9 Albion Rovers 1 2nd January 1937 - Division 1

McGillivray (3), Stewart (3), Stevenson (2). Ogilvie

Motherwell 9 Falkirk 1 11th August 1962 - League Cup

Russell (5), Quinn (4)

Having lost 4-2 at Brockville near the end of last season Motherwell exacted stunning revenge in front of the new Main Stand which seated its first audience for a competitive game. Russell started the goal glut after 5 minutes leaving two defenders in his wake before shooting home.

Quinn got the second when he lobbed the goalie from 25 yards. Russell made it 3-0 with a cracking shot in the 20th minute with Quinn adding a fourth. Russell again got in on the scoring act with the fifth when he poked the ball home. Quinn scored the sixth with an angular drive, and the seventh scoring from a Russell pass. Russell got the eighth and scored the ninth in the 37th second minute. With the score 9-0 at half time.

Falkirk fought a brave rearguard action not to conceded any more goals in the second half, and indeed pulled one back to make in 9-1. A magical performance from Motherwell in the opening 32 minutes that brought them nine goals, and a worthy way of opening a new stand.

Motherwell 12 Dundee Utd 1 23rd January 1954 - Division B

Humphries (6), Hunter (4), Redpath (2)

Motherwell tore Dundee United apart to record there highest ever league win with a sparkling performance of attacking football. The game will always be referred to as the Wilson Humphries match with the big striker scoring six goals.

His own best goal was his second scored from fully 20 yards, but one goal scored by Hunter was brilliantly engineered by the inside left. 15 minutes from time Humphries ran down the left wing, and as three Dundee United defenders closed in, he swerved and beat all three before centring for Hunter to score.

Jackie Hunter scored four goals -all the result of his speed and opportunism. He distributed the ball well and was always on the look out for a half chance. On Hunter's right was Jim Forrest, who despite of the fact that he made some of the goals should have been on the scoresheet on at least two occasions after he had beaten the opposition with his speed and skill.

The only regret of the match was that this record score was recorded against the team managed by Willie McFadyen, himself a Motherwell great.
