Mighty 'Well reach the CIS Quarter Finals

The Mighty ‘Well disposed of Inverness with three goals in the second half sealing the win.  The quarter final draw is on Saturday.

We fielded an unchanged side, yet again.Scott Leitch’s shoulder injury had recovered sufficiently for him to wear the captains’ armband and he led the team on to the unusual setup at the Caledonian Stadium. The small main stand was full of anticipation at kick off but the other three sides were deserted.

The less said about the first half the better. The first threat on either goal came from an O’Donnell effort but it posed no challenge to Brown in the ICT goal. The home side enjoyed the best of the next fifteen minutes and they had several chances, the best came when Hislop’s pacy run ended in a fierce shot into the side netting.

Our best chance probably came at a corner when Craigan powered a header high, very high, over the bar.It may have landed in the Moray Firth.

There must be some magic spell which falls over us at the half time break. We were two up within two minutes of the restart.First Foran produced a neat turn and strike into the keeper’s left hand corner after he gathered a loose ball following a blocked effort by Clarkson.

Then we were treated to a cool finish from Phil O’Donnell as he stroked the ball past Brown from eighteen yards. It looked like the game was over.

Inverness had other ideas though and five minutes later they pulled one back when we failed to clear a free kick and the ball was scrambled over the line by Tokely. The home side battled hard and we seemed to lose the place. The idea of killing off a game has still to be learned.Kinniburgh had to throw himself in front of a goal bound effort by Munro.

Our third came shortly after Paterson had replaced Clarkson.A quickly taken free kick released Foran and from deep in the box he squared to McBride for an easy tap in.Game over.

That’s two away wins in the CIS Cup.We look forward to Saturday’s draw for the quarter finals.
